The History

Chemin de Fer” and “French Ferme” are believed to be the forefathers of modern day Blackjack and were first played in French casinos sometime in the early 1700’s. Fifty to sixty years later the popularity of the game, commonly known in those times as “Vingt-et-Un” (twenty-one) spread to America. By the early 1900’s the game was commonly played in most casinos, and professional players were practicing and teaching a variety of systems and strategies to give gamblers an edge on the house.

Today Blackjack exists in many variations and is regularly played by millions of people from all over the world. “GSN's World Series of Blackjack”, “Las Vegas Hilton's Million Dollar Blackjack Tournament”, and the “World Series of Blackjack” are just a few of the major tournaments which reflect the success of this simple French game.

The Objective

Although there are many variations of the rules of Blackjack the fundamentals of the game remain the same. The objective is simple: to be holding a hand valuing 21, or closer to 21 than the dealer without busting. If your hand exceeds 21, you bust (loose). The dealer can also bust.

Basics of the game

As mentioned above the rules of blackjack are very similar from casino to casino, but we do recommend that you check the house rules before placing real bets in any casino, remember there are many variations of the game. The objective of course is a hand of 21, or closer to 21 than the hand of the dealer. Although a typical Blackjack table accommodates six to eight players, a player only bets against the dealer, the other players are of no concern, and the dealer must wager according to a defined set of rules.

The Card Values

Ace An ace is always valued at 11 or 1. If the total value of any hand containing and ace is less than the objective of 21, the ace would be valued at 11. If the value of the hand exceeds 21, the ace is valued at 1.

Face cards The Jacks, Queens, and Kings are all valued at 10.

2 through 10 These cards are always played at their face value. For example, a 2 is valued at 2, a 3 is valued and 3, a 4 is valued at 4, and so on.
